The previous articles of Nanshan Bio, a sodium alginate manufacturer in Qingdao, explained the function of sodium alginate in detail, but did not introduce the application of sodium alginate in pharmaceutical preparations. Today, Nanshan Bio-technology, a small series of sodium alginate, collected and sorted out the application of sodium alginate in pharmaceutical preparations.

Sodium alginate is used in pharmaceutical preparations

Sodium alginate was included in the United States Pharmacopoeia as early as 1938. Alginate was included in the British Pharmacopoeia in 1963. Alginic acid is insoluble in water, but it will swell when put into water. Therefore, traditionally, sodium alginate is used as a binder for tablets, while alginic acid is used as a disintegrant for quick-release tablets. However, the effect of sodium alginate on the properties of tablets depends on the amount put in the prescription, and in some cases, sodium alginate can promote the disintegration of tablets. Sodium alginate can be added in the process of granulation, rather than in the form of powder after granulation, which makes the production process simpler. Compared with starch, the mechanical strength of the tablets is greater.

Sodium alginate is also used in the production of suspensions, gels and concentrated emulsions based on fats and oils. Sodium alginate is used in some liquid drugs, which can enhance the viscosity and improve the suspension of solids. Propylene glycol alginate can improve the stability of emulsion. Controlled release drug delivery system plays an important role in health care. The time before the water-soluble drug particles are separated from the colloidal medium should be minimized to ensure the maximum drug loading. However, this is not important for water-insoluble drugs. They found that the release of drugs was related to the solubility of the drugs used.

A researcher reported that the swelling of alginate gel particles was pH-sensitive. For example, the particles did not change in distilled water or acidic medium (pH1.5KCl-HCl), but swelled rapidly in phosphate buffer with pH7.0, and the size became larger. The acid sensitivity of sodium alginate is very useful for drugs, which can protect drugs from the attack of gastric acid, and the swelling of xerogel in small intestine can release drugs at a desired rate.

Another researcher prepared controlled-release sodium alginate pellets containing diclofenac sodium (slightly soluble in water) by crosslinking sodium alginate with glutaraldehyde under acidic conditions and pouring it into ethanol solution. The embedding rate is 30% ~ 71%, which depends on the preparation conditions. The increase of temperature or the extension of exposure time with cross-linked substances during the preparation of microspheres will reduce the embedding rate and prolong the drug release time.

More sodium alginate is in the technical literature of pharmaceutical preparations, and sodium alginate manufacturers will update it one after another. If you need sodium alginate products, you can directly call the phone at the upper right of the website for consultation.
