Sodium alginate, a white or yellowish powder with molecular formula (C6H7NaO6)x, is a natural polysaccharide, which has the stability, solubility, viscosity and safety required by pharmaceutical excipients.

In 1881, E.C.Stanford, a British chemist, first made scientific research on alginate extract from brown algae. He found that the extract of alginic acid has several interesting characteristics, which have the ability to concentrate solution, form gel and film. So he put forward several applications for industrial production. However, alginate was not produced on a large scale until 50 years later.
