Usually, people use toothpaste every day, but they may not know what it has to do with sodium alginate. Sodium alginate can be used as an adhesive or thickener in toothpaste manufacturing, and toothpaste contains the same basic functional components, including wetting agent, surfactant, adhesive, essence, sweetener, preservative, friction agent and so on.
In order to prevent the dispersed particles from gathering and settling in the dispersion medium when making toothpaste, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is usually used as thickener to form colloid with aqueous solution, so as to increase the viscosity of the dispersion medium and prevent the dispersed particles from settling. Toothpaste has a certain consistency. The ideal consistency is that the toothpaste is easy to be extruded from the hose, and it is in strips and keeps a certain shape on the toothpaste. When brushing your teeth, you can cover your teeth without splashing. These properties are closely related to the rheological properties of toothpaste.
Sodium alginate can be used as adhesive or thickener in toothpaste manufacturing, and its dosage is generally 0.5% ~ 1.0%. Sodium alginate has good stability, especially in toothpaste with enzyme. When sodium carboxymethyl cellulose was used, the hardness of paste decreased to 1/6 of the original value after two months of storage. When sodium alginate is used, the hardness of the paste remains basically unchanged after four months of storage.
Sodium alginate and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose have similar properties. At the same dosage, the viscosity of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is higher than that of sodium alginate, but the thixotropy of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is lower than that of sodium alginate. Normal paste must have a certain consistency and thixotropy to ensure the stability of paste and meet the requirements of production and use. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose has poor thixotropy and is not suitab le for single use. Sodium alginate has good thixotropy, but its viscosity is too low. In order to obtain better viscosity and thixotropy, the combination of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and sodium alginate can achieve the purpose of learning from each other. Generally, the ratio of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose to sodium alginate is 2: 1 as the thickener of toothpaste.
The following is a formula of toothpaste containing sodium alginate:
5% of sodium cetyl sarcosine, 0.5% of sodium lauryl sulfate, 0.9% of sodium alginate, 25% of glycerol, 0.35% of sodium saccharin, 50% of calcium hydrogen phosphate, 1.3% of perfume and 100% of water.
